Sam Querrey admits getting “into a little rut”

American tennis player Sam Querrey admitted that he lost a bit of motivation during the 2013 season, stating that this was partly caused by the end of his engagement to fiancée, Emily McPherson last summer.

“Mentally I don’t think I was all there,” he said in an interview with USA Today. “I’m no longer engaged. I’ll tell you that.”

Querrey lost his second round match in New York to Adrian Mannarino of France.

The American reached a career high number 17 back in 2011 but fell down to number 46. He last won a title back in 2012 in Los Angeles.

He’s had some success during the early part of the season, reaching the fourth round of Indian Wells and Miami Masters.

“I wasn’t really enjoying it as much as I should have. I got into a little rut,” Querrey said. “I’m not exactly sure what the right word is. Just kind of over it for a little bit.”

Querrey is now looking forward to the 2014 season. He’ll start his campaign at the Brisbane International which begins on Monday.

“If I fine-tune everything just a little bit, not even a lot, I can jump into the top 15,” he said.
