Victoria Azarenka defeats Serena Williams at Thailand exhibition match

World number two Victoria Azarenka defeated top-ranked Serena Williams in an exhibition match that took place at the Hua Hin resort in Thailand on Saturday. The Belarussian secured the victory 7-5, 6-3 against the American in a match watched by more than 3,000 fans at the Hua Hin World Tennis Invitation.

Azarenka broke Williams’ serve to lead 6-5 in the first set and broke the American’s serve twice in the second to secure the win. The last time they’ve played against each other was at the US Open 2013 final in September with Williams winning the match in three sets.

Williams commented after the match that the event was “a good warm-up before Australia. Victoria is a strong player. It’s always fun to play someone like her.”
