19-year old Eugenie Bouchard reaches Australian Open semifinals, beats Ivanovic

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard reached her first career Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open on Tuesday after the 19-year old ousted 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in their quarterfinal showdown. Ivanovic made headlines on the previous round after the Serbian ousted heavy favorite and five-time champion Serena Williams. Bouchard will next face Li Na of China in the semifinal.

This will be the third time in this tournament that the Chinese star will face another teenager.

Bouchard made history for her country as the first Canadian to have reached the semifinals in Melbourne.

“It’s something I’ve been doing since I was five years old and working my whole life for and sacrificing a lot of things for, so it’s not exactly a surprise,” she said. “I always expect myself to do well. I’m just happy to have gone through this step. I’m not done.”

“She’s brave. She’s young. She has nothing to lose,” Ivanovic said. “I think she’s a very great player with a bright future.”

Li won their previous match in Montreal back in 2012.

“We had a tough battle last time, and I think I didn’t have a lot of experience back then,” Bouchard said. This time I think I’ll be ready.”
