France secures first Hopman Cup title

Team France has won the Hopman Cup 2014 title after defeating top-seeds Poland in the mixed-team competition. This is the first time that France has won this event.

In the first match in the final, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga outlasted Grzegorz Panfil 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Agnieszka Radwanska evened the tie after she defeated Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. It all went down to the mixed doubles event.

France would go on to dominate that match after defeating Poland 6-0, 6-2 in just 47 minutes to secure the victory. Poland was also aiming for a first title victory at this tournament. Wimbledon 2013 semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz had to pull out in the last minute and was replaced by world number 288 Panfil.

“I’m really happy to win today. It’s always good to hold the trophy,” Tsonga said.

“It feels great. I’m very happy that we made history today and France finally won the Hopman Cup. I think we deserved it. I’m happy I gave a good show to the crowd,” Cornet added.
