Li Na wins Australian Open 2014 title, beats Slam final debutante Cibulkova

China’s Li Na won the Australian Open 2014 title on Saturday, her second career Grand Slam title, after she defeated 20th-seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-6, 6-0. Li won her first Slam back at the 2011 French Open.

The Chinese star was a runner-up in 2011 and 2013, despite having won the first set. This time, she’s not letting the third opportunity slip away as she stormed in the second set to finally hoist the trophy.

Li Na was clearly the heavy favorite in this match-up as since she has a 4-0 head to head series lead over Cibulkova. However, the Slovak has had momentous wins in this tournament including upset wins over Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska.

“These were just two fantastic weeks of my life – I think I’m going to cry,” Cibulkova said during the trophy presentation. “This means a lot for our country and I’m happy I can be the one who can be here for Slovakia. I’d also like to congratulate Li Na – she had a great tournament and deserved this.” – See more at: http://www.wtatennis.com/news/article/3637340/title/li-conquers-australian-open#sthash.BHsH9gMu.dpuf
