Nicolas Almagro pulls out of Australian Open 2014 due to injury

World number 13 Nicolas Almagro has pulled out of the Australian Open 2014 due to a shoulder injury. The Spaniard has already pulled out of the ongoing Sydney International tournament due to the same injury.

“I can tell you that I will not be able to go to Australia, now I need to continue recuperating and look to the future with optimism,” Almagro confirmed.

This development will significantly affect Almagro’s ranking after the Australian Open as he is a defending quarterfinalist where he was defeated in a five-set match by compatriot David Ferrer.

This means, out of the world’s top 32, 29th ranked Melzer and Almagro have pulled out for the upcoming Grand Slam event.
