Roger Federer advances to Brisbane International semifinals, to face Chardy

Top seed Roger Federer is through to the semifinals of the Brisbane International 2014 tournament after the Swiss tennis superstar eliminated Marinko Matosevic 6-1, 6-1 in only 58 minutes on Friday. The world number six produced nine aces and broke his opponent’s serve five times.

“Tonight I felt very good against Matosevic who can play very dangerous,” said Federer. “He’s got a good enough serve and return as well. But I was able to control most of the match except the very beginning. For that, I’m very happy.”

Federer also participated in the doubles event where he’s also reached the semifinals with partner Nicolas Mahut of France.

Up next for Federer is Jeremy Chardy who eliminated Samuel Groth of Australia 7-5, 6-4 in 64 minutes. This will be the first meeting between Federer and 34th-ranked Chardy.

“He plays very aggressive on the hard courts,” said Federer. “I remember seeing him play really well in Cincinnati, which is similar to here. I remember seeing him play well at the Aussie Open last year when he made the quarters, I think. So he can definitely bring a big game to the court, especially with his serve and forehand. He can really dictate play.”
