Roger Federer to play Davis Cup tie vs Serbia

Eighth-ranked Roger Federer has decided to take part in this weekend’s Davis Cup World Group first round tie versus Serbia.

The Swiss tennis star has not competed at a World Group Davis Cup tie since 2004. However, he has participated sporadically through the succeeding years during relegation matches to help Switzerland retain its status in the World Group.

Federer will be joining newly-crowned Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka, who is also the new Swiss number one player. The duo will be facing a rather weak Serbian team following the absence of world number two Novak Djokovic.

The winner of the Switzerland vs Serbia match will play the winner of the Kazakhstan vs Belgium in the quarterfinals slated this April 2014.

“Federer’s arrival surprised everyone,” Serbian team coach Bogdan Obradovic was quoted as saying.

“It tells us that the Swiss are taking this match very seriously.”

The matches will take place at Novi Sad.
