Serena Williams considered pairing with Federer at Australian Open 2014 mixed doubles

World number one Serena Williams said that she considered participating at the Australian Open 2014 mixed doubles event and would have wanted Roger Federer to be her partner. However, she decided not to proceed with the plan as she’s already signed up for the doubles event with older sister Venus Williams.

“Honestly I was going to ask Roger because I saw he was playing doubles [in Brisbane International],” she said. “Venus was like, ‘Let’s play doubles,’ and I was like, ‘Okay.’,” she added.

“I can’t play three events. I still rather play doubles than mixed, even though I don’t have the mixed title. I still would much rather play doubles than mixed. It’s my sister, it’s fun, and it’s great. I love playing doubles. I’m pretty good at it.”

Williams said that she would like to complete a career Grand Slam in mixed doubles in the future. She’s yet to win the Australian Open and French Open mixed doubles titles but came close in the past where she finished runner-up in both events.

“I don’t know,” she said. “Have to figure out the best way to win Australia and the French Open in mixed,” she said. “I’ve got to figure out how to do it.”
