Serena Williams knocked out by Ana Ivanovic at Australian Open 2014

World number one Serena Williams crashed out of the Australian Open 2014 tournament on Sunday after she was beaten in the fourth round by former top-ranked Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Williams has not lost a match since August last year and her 25 consecutive wins came to an end at the Melbourne Park.

This was Williams’ 70th match in Melbourne, which is a record in Open Era. She also set the record with the most match wins at this Grand Slam event at 61 after she won her third round match.

The American was heavily favored to win this match as Ivanovic has not won (even a set) in their past four matches. This seemed to be the case in the match when Williams won the firt set. However, Ivanovic found her range and fought back in the second set to even the match. In the end, Ivanovic held her nerve and did not allow Williams to make a comeback to secure a quarterfinal berth. Ivanovic is a former finalist in Melbourne.

Ivanovic will next face the winner of the other fourth round match between Casey Dellacqua and Eugenie Bouchard.
