Serena Williams slated for Indian Wells 2014 participation, first since 2002

World number one Serena Williams is reportedly set to participate at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. This will be the first time she’ll be part of the event since 2002, the time she won the title.

Williams and sister Venus have not participated at this Premier event since then after they’ve decided to boycott the event. In 2002, the sisters were slated to meet in the semifinals but minutes prior to the match, Venus withdrew and Serena was booed during the final against Kim Clijsters. Serena Williams would eventually win her second Indian Wells title but they’ve vowed never to return.

The entries list for the BNP Paribas Open 2014 has been released. Venus Williams is not in the roster.

Aside from the top-ranked American, also in the event are number two Victoria Azarenka, number three Maria Sharapova, eighth-ranked Jelena Jankovic and number 10 Caroline Wozniacki.
