Stanislas Wawrinka wins second Chennai Open title, denies Roger-Vasselin first title

World number eight Stanislas Wawrinka began his 2014 season with a title win in India after the Swiss star won his second Chennai Open title on Sundy after a straight sets 7-5, 6-2 win over Edouard Roger-Vasselin in a match that lasted 95 minutes. It was Wawrinka’s 500th career match where his win loss record stands at 302-198.

It was a dominating performance for Wawrinka who did not lose a set on his way to the title.

“I was really happy with the way I was playing,” Wawrinka said. “In the end I think I served well and played aggressive. Edouard is a tough player to beat. I lost against him last year in Basel. He was playing really good this week.

“I need to keep practising and keep going for the rest of the year because it’s only one week. I need to keep pushing myself to try to improve,” he added.

This is Wawrinka’s fifth career title and he continued his momentum from a fruitful 2013 season. The Swiss number two progressed to four finals last year and won one in Oeiras, Portugal. He would go on to reach the US Open semifinals and qualify for the first time at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals where he also reached the
Wawrinka goes home with $72,490 in prize money plus 250 ranking points. Roger-Vasselin received $38,180 and 150 ranking points. Despite the loss, Roger-Vasselin remained happy with the fact that he will achieve a career-high ranking of number 40 on Monday after a runner-up finish in Chennai.

“After this final I can say it was a great week for me, but every week is different and I have to be focused on my game,” said Roger-Vasselin. “Of course it gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.”

The doubles event was won by Frederik Neilsen and Johan Brunstrom.
