WTA mulls players using real-time data during matches

The WTA is reportedly mulling the possibility of letting the players avail of real-time data used by the organization’s technology partner, SAP, during matches. Currently, coaches get to receive point-by-point analysis after matches. SAP reportedly can collect data fast enough that it can be provided almost immediately through its mobile application.

WTA currently allows on-court coaching and if the above legislation is approved, the players will have a chance to discuss the data with their coaches during the matches – a first of its kind in the sport. Should it get approved, it will be implemented at least by the year 2015.

“We are looking to work with the WTA to roll that out to the athletes and the coaches with on-court coaching,” SAP solution architect, Jenni Lewis said during this week’s Brisbane International. “At the moment there isn’t a rule that allows us to walk out on court with a piece of technology for the coach to be able to track it, but that’s one of our strategies to work with the sport and governing bodies and the athletes themselves to be able to offer the insight; to be able to see visually what is going on.”
