Andy Murray must win Indian Wells and Miami for year-end number one change – Petchey

Sky Sports commentator Mark Petchey wrote in an article that Andy Murray would need to at least win the upcoming ATP Masters 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Miami next month to have a shot of ending the 2014 season as world number one. He also stressed that comparing Murray’s comeback from back surgery and Rafael Nadal’s comeback a year ago from knee problems can’t be done.

“Nadal showed last year that if you get your confidence back then great things can happen,” Petchey wrote. “However, people need to be realistic. There will always be people comparing his comeback to Nadal’s return last season but you need to keep it in perspective. Rafa came back straight onto his favorite surface of clay and he had a long build-up to the French Open. In contrast, Andy picked a harder route—the Australian Open is his toughest surface—but he’ll be happy for the most part from his efforts Down Under.”

“Andy now has two main career goals—to win the two remaining majors and reach world No. 1. He’ll know he needs to win the upcoming Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami to stand a chance of reaching the summit this year. He has really got to target those two U.S. events.”

Petchey once coached Murray in the past.
