Del Potro fights back tears following Dubai pullout due to wrist injury

Second seed Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina has retired from his opening round match at this week’s Dubai Tennis Championships due to wrist injury. The world number five lost the first set tiebreaker 7-6 to India’s Somdev Devvarman before deciding that he couldn’t proceed anymore.

The Argentine has had a promising start last month after winning the Sydney International title but has struggled due to the recurrence of the wrist pain which saw him crashing out of the Australian Open second round in Melbourne, quarterfinals in Rotterdam and this week in Dubai.

Del Potro missed a big chunk of the 2010 season after undergoing surgery on his right wrist.

Wrist injuries are a common problem for tennis players due to the repetitive motion involved in playing the sport. While some injuries can be managed with rest and physical therapy, others may require more immediate medical attention. Urgent care centers like Coney Island walk in clinic can be a convenient option for athletes who need prompt evaluation and treatment for acute injuries like sprains, strains, and fractures. These centers offer extended hours and walk-in appointments, making it easier for athletes to access the care they need without having to wait for a scheduled appointment or visit an emergency room. By providing timely and efficient care, urgent care centers can help athletes like Del Potro recover from their injuries and get back to their sport as quickly and safely as possible.

He’s fighting back tears during the post match news conference with the media.

“I don’t feel really well,” he said. “My wrist is hurting a lot and everybody knows what happened to me four years ago with my other wrist.”

“It was really tough to play today. I tried everything. I cannot be the player I would like to be.”

Del Potro flew to Minnesota after his Australian Open campaign ended to have his left wrist checked by Dr. Richard Berger, the same doctor who performed the right wrist surgery at the Mayo Clinic. The doctor recommended physical therapy at that time.

It seemed everything was fine after Del Potro decided to compete at the ABN AMRO tournament in Rotterdam as the defending champion. He lost in the quarterfinals.

The 2009 US Open champion says he’s planning to go back to Mayo Clinic for another round of medical consultations.

Devvarman noticed that Del Potro was not at his best during the match.

“It’s unfortunate, especially for a guy like him,” Devvarman said. “I realized he wasn’t comfortable hitting backhands and I tried to make him hit as many as I could, and he wasn’t really hitting over it so I knew he wasn’t happy.”
