Gambler earns AUS$225,000 for correctly predicting Wawrinka-Li Australian Open 2014 win

Australia’s largest bookmaker, TAB Sportsbet, revealed that one of their betters will stand to receive AUS$225,000 on a AUS$500 bet for correctly predicting Stanislas Wawrinka and Li Na to win the Australian Open 2014 men’s and women’s singles title respectively.

The bet was reportedly placed on January 16 when the odds for these tennis stars winning the title in Melbourne was 451/1.

Wawrinka would go on to win the title after defeating three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals and heavy favorite Rafael Nadal in the final. Li, seeded fourth, had an easier path to the final following the early exits of the likes of Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova. Li would go on to defeat 20th-seed Dominika Cibulkova in the final.

The identity of the better was not yet known as he or she placed the bet in cash.
