Li Na secures career high world number two ranking in singles, a historic feat

Australian Open 2014 champion Li Na has just assured herself a career high ranking of world number two after incumbent Victoria Azarenka pulled out of the Qatar Open 2014 tournament which begins next week. Azarenka is a two-time defending champion in Doha and will relinquish 900 ranking points for the withdrawal.

By achieving this feat, Li Na became the first Asian player (male or female) to be part of the world’s top two in singles. Countrywoman Peng Shuai is on course to clinch the number one ranking in doubles with a strong performance in Doha since incumbent Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci are the defending champions in the doubles event while Peng has not participated in the event last year.
