Two-time Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling takes on role as Stockholm Open Tournament Director

Two-time Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling has taken on a new role as the Tournament Director for the Stockholm Open. However, the former world number four stressed that he has not yet retired from professional tennis.

Soderling, who’s reached the French Open finals in 2009 and 2010, has not competed in more than two and a half years due to health problems, including a diagnosis of mononucleosis which causes extreme fatigue. His last tournament was the Bastad tournament back in July 2011 which he won.

“Robin Soderling takes up the position as ambassador and tournament director,” the organizers announced via the tournament website.

“The decision to help strengthen the tournament line-up and cooperation with sponsors does not mean he has given up hope of making a comeback on the ATP World Tour,” the statement added.

Soderling said that though he’s been “training carefully for a return” to professional tennis, he’s found an outlet to be still involved in the game in the meantime by taking on this new role.

The 29-year old has stated in past interviews that he’s raring to make a comeback on tour although he wants to do it once he’s sure that he can play in the same level he had before and has not stated a timeframe for the comeback.

Soderling still holds the record as the only player to have defeated Rafael Nadal at the French Open which happened back in 2009.
