World number two Victoria Azarenka could go home with the very expensive Diamond Ball trophy if she wins the Qatar Open 2014 title next week. The Belarussian is a two-time defending champion at this hardcourt event.
The Qatar Tennis Federation announced that the trophy will be given to a player who has won this event at least three times. Azarenka is the only player in the draw who will qualify for this honor.
Azarenka first won this event back in 2012 when she defeated Sam Stosur of Australia and last year when she defeated American Serena Williams in three close sets.
“It is very exciting to know that Victoria Azarenka could win the Diamond Ball trophy. It would be an incredible achievement to win the Qatar Total Open title three times and no player has been able to do so before,” said Saad al-Mohannadi, the Qatar Open Tournament director.
“With so many talented players in the draw, it is a very competitive field and it would be interesting to see if Victoria can defend her title and win the Diamond Ball trophy as well,” he added.
