Andy Murray survives tough test from Czech Jiri Vesely at Indian Wells

Fifth-seed Andy Murray survived a seemingly exhausting third round encounter at the BNP Paribas Open 2014 Indian Wells on Monday after defeating promising Czech player Jiri Vesely 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

“The most important thing today was that I won,” said Murray. “I wasn’t happy with the way that I played. It’s kind of days like that where I could have lost the match and you don’t get an opportunity until Miami to play better or to improve some things. It’s good to have the chance to play another match here and hopefully put in a better performance”

“It was just one of those matches where there wasn’t one period where I thought that the level of tennis from both of us was high at the same time,” said Murray. “That can create a lot of breaks and a lot of sort of back and forth swings in the match. It wasn’t just the start of the match that was frustrating. The whole match was.”

Vesely, 20, was named ATP Star of Tomorrow of 2013 and made his debut at this ATP Masters 1000 event.

“He’s a Top 10 guy, so it’s a very special game or special match for me because I don’t still have so many experience with these guys,” Vesely said. “So it was a special match for me, and I really have to take all of the positives out of the match.”
