Argentine Federico Delbonis wins Brasil Open 2014 title, beats veteran Paolo Lorenzi

Argentine Federico Delbonis won his first ATP Tour-level title on Sunday after he defeated Paolo Lorenzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Brasil Open 2014 final. It was a match that featured unseeded players who are seeking their first ATP title.

“All the matches were complicated,” Delbonis said. “I remember moments from each one of them, especially the one I had with Nico (Almagro) when I lost the first set. It was a hard moment but I was able to come back. I think that everything happened because of the calm attitude I had when facing the key moments. That allowed me to always find a solution and find again my best game.”

Lorenzi, a 32-year old veteran, is aiming to be the oldest first time winner on tour since Wayne Arthurs who was 33 when he won the Scottsdale event back in 2005. The Italian, currently ranked 114th, has had his best tournament result in Sao Paolo. He has never gone past the quarterfinals of an ATP event before this one.

“I loved the entire week here,” said Lorenzi. “For me, it felt like my home. It has been incredible and I’m very happy. I tried to win the final, but he played the important points better and that’s tennis.”

Delbonis takes hom $85,900 in prize money plus 250 ranking points. Lorenzi gains $45,245 and 150 ranking points.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Philipp Oswald won the doubles event after they defeated Robert Farah and Juan Sebastian Cabal 5-7, 6-4, 15-13.
