Martina Hingis, Sabine Lisicki win Sony Open Miami 2014 women’s doubles crown

Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki concluded their dream run at the Sony Open Miami 2014 tournament with an exciting title victory over number 2 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. This is the second tournament for Hingis and Lisicki who made a first round exit at the Indian Wells tournament two weeks ago.

Hingis and Lisicki have taken out higher-ranked teams along the way including sixth-seeds Lucie Safarova and Andrea Hlavackova and fifth-seeds Sania Mirza and Cara Black.

“Obviously it’s very exciting when you convert match point and you’re like, ‘Yes, we did it,'” Hingis said. “But Sabine played incredible. That super tie-breaker, I was like, ‘Okay, I better put the ball in and let her do the rest.’ Because she was really on fire. From 5-all on it was just amazing. She definitely gets going when it’s tight – other players sometimes go down, but she lifts her level in those moments.”

“I always wanted to play with Martina, obviously,” Lisicki said. “We talked about it at Wimbledon last year, and finally we did it here in the States. I think we’re just happy and really enjoying it.”

Hingis have returned to doubles competition late last year after nearly six years in retirement. She played five events last season with Daniela Hantuchova but they’ve never gone past the second round. Hingis is currently mentoring Lisicki and the duo decided to compete in doubles this season.

“Well, I think two weeks ago if you asked me that question, it would probably be a completely different answer from today!” she said. “Last week, I was like, ‘I’m not sure if I want to put myself out there like this and lose first, second round. But now, after this victory, definitely things have changed.

“I would be very happy to continue to play some more doubles.”
