Novak Djokovic wins fourth Miami Masters title, denies Nadal to seal first title in Florida

World number two Novak Djokovic completed a second Indian Wells-Miami double on Sunday after he defeated top-ranked Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-3 in the Sony Open 2014 Tennis men’s singles final.

The Serbian tennis star just became the second player to complete a second Indian Wells-Miami double. The first one to achieve the feat was Roger Federer back in 2005 and 2006. The first time Djokovic achieved this was back in 2011 when he went on a 41-match unbeaten streak from the start of that season until the French Open semifinals.

“It’s been a fantastic tournament, a very enjoyable time as it always is in Miami,” said Djokovic. “I played a great match, from the start to the end everything was working really well. It’s always a challenge and a pleasure to play against Rafa. Back in 2007 I won my first big title here in Miami and I have the greatest memories from this centre court.”

This is the 40th Djokovic vs Nadal showdown on tour and Djokovic just reduced Nadal’s lead in their head to head series to 18-22. Djokovic is on a three-match win streak against Nadal. After losing to the Spaniard at the US Open 2013 final, Djokovic exacted his revenge at the China Open final in Beijing and at the final of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Nadal will have to wait another year in order to win his first Miami Masters title. He’s been in the final four times in the past but lost. Nadal has yet to win Miami, Paris and Shanghai but does hold a record 26 ATP Masters 1000 titles.

“I want to congratulate Novak and his team, he played an amazing two tournaments in a row,” said Nadal. “Winning Indian Wells and Miami is very difficult to do. In no other tournament have I lost this many finals, but it’s always a very special tournament for me. The energy and passion from the crowd is unforgettable.”
