Roberto Bautista Agut upsets Tomas Berdych in Indian Wells

One of the biggest upsets at the BNP Paribas 2014 Indian Wells happened on Sunday when Roberto Bautista Agut, ranked 53rd, ousted fourth-seed Tomas Berdych 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round. Up next for Bautista Agut is either 26th seed Jarkko Nieminen or Florian Mayer.

This was Berdych’s first opening round loss at the an ATP Masters 1000 event since Montreal in 2009.

“He was a tough opponent… [and] really handled the tough situation today really well,” said Berdych. “Anything I touched today was basically bad and was wrong. It [was] definitely my worst match that I had this year. I was late everywhere. I was not hitting the ball cleanly and that’s it.”

Berdych has had an impressive 16-4 record this season which saw him winning the ATP 500 Rotterdam title and reaching another ATP 500 final in Dubai a week ago. He lost to six-time champion Roger Federer.
