Serena Williams confirms Bank of the West Classic 2014 return

World number one Serena Williams has confirmed that she will make a return to the Bank of the West Classic tournament in Stanford, California in July. This development was announced by the tournament organizers in the event’s official website.

Williams won the Premier-level tournament back in 2011 and 2012 but did not return to defend the title for the third time last year. The Stanford event starts the US Open Series and takes place from July 28 to August 3.

The top-ranked Williams won the Premier-level event in 2011 and ’12 but did not play last year. The tournament, which runs from July 28-Aug. 3, comes three weeks after Wimbledon and launches the U.S. Open Series.

The field is not yet complete but several marquee WTA stars have already confirmed participation in the event includign defending champion Dominika Cibulkova, the 11th-ranked Slovakian who reached the Australian Open 2014 final last January. Former top-ranked Ana Ivanovic has been included in the roster.

Williams will be taking a break in the next two weeks as she’s not slated to compete at the BNP Paribas Open 2014 Indian Wells and she will be back in action at the Sony Open in Miami later this month as defending champion.
