Serena Williams up for Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award in Kuala Lumpur

World number one Serena Williams has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of The Year category for the upcoming Laureus World Sports Awards following her outstanding 2013 season which saw her reclaim the world number one ranking and win additional two Grand Slam titles. The American could become the first three-time winner of this award.

Williams won a total of 11 WTA titles last year which included Grand Slam wins at the Roland Garros and US Open. She had a 78-4 win loss record and amassed $12,385,572 in prize money, a record in women’s tennis. She also returned to the top of the world rankings by February 18, 2013 and has stayed there since.

Williams will be competing with other great athletes such as pole vaulter Yelene Isinbayeva (also a two-time winner in the category), soccer player Nadine Angerer, swimming star Missy Franklin, track and field – sprinting star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and skiing star Tina Maze.

The 15th edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on March 26. The Malaysian city will be hosting a WTA event in a few weeks following this event.
