Serena Williams all set to defend Sony Open Miami title

World number one Serena Williams is all set to defend the Sony Open Miami title later this month. The American has a chance to win the event for the record seventh time. She will have ample rest time for this Premier-level WTA event as she has opted to skip the BNP Paribas Open 2014 Indian Wells tournament this week.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion is slated to play her opening match on March 20. Her first round opponent will be known once the draw is unveiled on March 16. The American has always stated that this is one of her favorite tournaments because the venue is close to her Palm Beach Gardens home which will give opportunity for family and friends to come over and watch her play.

The Sony Open runs from March 17 to 30 at the Crandon Park Tennis Center. It is one of the most attended tennis event in the world which the very best players in the world.

In 2013, Williams won her sixth title in Miami, effectively overtaking the record set by Steffi Graf for most title wins in this event. She set to break the tie with Graf’s husband Andre Agassi who also won six titles in the ATP Masters 1000 event.
