Serena Williams wins seventh Sony Open Tennis Miami title, defeats Li Na

World number one Serena Williams hoisted her seventh Sony Open Tennis Miami trophy on Saturday following a come from behind victory over world number two Li Na.

Williams was down 2-5 in the first set and even had to save a point along the way. However, the American would go on to storm her way to victory, winning 11 out of the remaining 12 games to a 7-5, 6-1 win.

“I have to say well done to Serena – you had a very good two weeks here,” Li said during the trophy ceremony.

Williams said that winning the title was very important for her, especially since she had to fight hard against the Chinese tennis superstar.

“It was a really important victory, especially playing Li Na, who has been playing so well,” Williams said. “She started out so well – I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I just need to hang in here.’ Then I heard some fans trying to pull me through – if it hadn’t been for you guys I wouldn’t be standing here right now.”

Williams will have little rest after this victory as she’s slated to compete at the Family Circle Cup next week where she’s also the defending champion.
