Stanislas Wawrinka loses first match of 2014 season at Indian Wells

Stanislas Wawrinka’s unbeaten streak this 2014 season ended on Wednesday when the Swiss star lost his fourth round match at the BNP Paribas Open 2014 Indian Wells. The Australian Open 2014 champion was defeated by South African Kevin Anderson 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. Up next for Anderson is another Swiss player – Roger Federer after the latter eliminated good friend Tommy Haas of Germany 6-4, 6-4.

Anderson has been posting strong results this season so far which saw his ranking rise to career high number 18. The South African reached the finals of Delray Beach and Acapulco. This is his first victory in four matches against Wawrinka.

“It wasn’t really on my mind that he had won Australia,” said Anderson. “Just focused on what I was doing… I knew it was a tough match today, and it feels great to beat somebody who obviously has just won a Grand Slam.”

Wawrinka, ranked number three in the world, admitted that he was mentally tired but credited his opponent for playing a great game.

“For sure he’s playing good,” said Wawrinka. “He’s a tough player to play on fast condition. He’s serving big and always put a lot of pressure.

“But I’m more disappointed with myself. I felt I was tired mentally, but that’s not the problem. I should just accept that and be positive. I think I was negative on all the match. I was complaining a lot about my serve, about the way I was playing, and with that, I don’t deserve to win matches. I think I should have been more positive with myself, just trying to find solution, because it was still a close match.”
