Stanislas Wawrinka ready to compete following month-long break

Australian Open 2014 champion Stanislas Wawrinka took a much-deserved break from tennis after winning his Maiden Grand Slam singles title in Melbourne last January. Wawrinka said he returned to Switzerland to spend time with family and friends and rest his body and prepare for an exhausting tennis season ahead.

“It took me time to realize really what I did in Australian Open. Still when I’m saying that I won a Grand Slam it’s still strange for me,” he said on Friday after winning his opening doubles match at Indian Wells with compatriot Roger Federer. “It was good to be with the family, to take more time for myself.”

Wawrinka started practicing again a week ago in time for the ATP Masters 1000 BNP Paribas Open in Indian wells which already began this week.

“I feel great,” he said. “I think my level is really good and physically I’m ready.”

Wawrinka, currently the number one play in Switzerland, said that he’s not sure whether he can win another Grand Slam title.

“You know, I’m not sure if I can in a Grand Slam again,” he said. “I know I did it already. I know that I can reach that level, but it’s going to be tough.

“I need to be ready every match, to try to win every match.”
