Tomas Berdych advances to Miami Masters 2014 semifinals, assures of top five return

Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych is assured of a return in the world’s top five after winning his quarterfinal match at the Miami Masters 2014 against Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 7-6. This is Berdych’s 450th career victory on tour.

“It is a big value, of course,” Berdych said of his top five return. “That’s the thing why you play tennis. It’s also one of the goals that we have in tennis… It’s even more important when you are more stable, more consistent and you are able to keep it up for a longer time. The best way to end up like that is in the end of the year.”

This is the 28-year old’s third visit in the semifinals at this ATP Masters 1000 event. He reached the final back in 2010 where he lost to Andy Roddick.

Up next for Berdych is world number one Rafael Nadal after the latter survived a tough test brought by Canada’s Milos Raonic. Nadal is seeking his first trophy at this event.

Dolgopolov is keeping a positive perspective about the loss.

“I think I have done quite well, even in this match,” said Dolgopolov. “I’m obviously not happy to lose. I had set point in the second set on my serve, so I had chances to go three sets. And in the first set I was a break up. I’m happy to finish the series that I have done for seven weeks.”
