Croatian Donna Vekic secures first career title at BMW Malaysian Open 2014

Croatia’s Donna Vekic won her first career WTA title on Sunday after winning the BMW Malaysian Open 2014 title. The 17-year old made a lot of achievements in the event after securing her first top ten victory against finalist Dominika Cibulkova 5-7, 7-5, 7-6.

Vekic has reached the finals twice in the past but lost – in Tashkent last 2012 and Birmingham last year.

“I’m so happy – I don’t know what to say, I’m so, so happy!” Vekic said.

“It was a very tough match. She played very well throughout the whole match. I was up 5-1 in the third set and she came back out playing insane – so I’m happy I was able to get through in the end.”

Cibulkova, who made impressive strides this season which saw her reach the Australian Open 2014 final, was gracious in defeat.

“She played really well today,” Cibulkova said. “In the second set I was really close to winning, but she played really well, really strong, and it was just about a few balls out there, really.

“It was really close. It was such a good match.”
