Retired tennis player Elena Dementieva has given birth to her first child last week. She and husband, Maxim Afinogenov, named their first child Veronika.
The former world number three retired at the conclusion of the 2010 season and opted to stay low key and enjoyed her life post-tennis with Afinogenov, a known ice hockey player.
The pair first met in 2004, the time when Dementieva reached the French Open final. They married seven years later (2011) in Moscow.
Dementieva has a lustrous tennis career. Even though she hasn’t won a Grand Slam singles title, she has come close twice – reaching the 2004 French Open and US Open finals. She won the singles gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She’s won a total of 16 titles and has been in the world’s top ten from 2001 until her retirement.
