Roger Federer said that he’s happy for compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka when the latter won the Monte Carlo Masters title on Sunday which came at his expense when he lost in a three-set match 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. This was Wawrinka’s second victory out of 15 tries against Federer.
“I’m very happy for Stan. It’s a huge win for him after winning his first Grand Slam this year, to win his first Masters 1000 [trophy],” said Federer. “ To take the opportunities when they’re there, that’s key in a tennis player’s career.”
The Monte Carlo Masters 2014 final featured an All-Swiss showdown, which was a first in the ATP Tour in 14 years.
“It was a great pleasure to share this moment with Stan,” Federer said. “It was a tennis celebration on a beautiful court.”
Federer has yet to win the Monte Carlo event, having now finished runner-up four times. He’s a 21-time Masters 1000 titlist. Despite the loss, Federer can still reflect on a very strong 2014 season which saw him win his 78th career title in Dubai and finish runner-up in Brisbane, Indian Wells and Monte Carlo. He reached the semifinals of the Australian Open back in January.
“I played with a lot of intensity during the past month,” said Federer. “I’m happy that I can relax.”
Federer’s next tournaments are Madrid Masters and Rome Masters before heading to Paris for the French Open tournament.
