Third-ranked Stan Wawrinka pulls out of Portugal Open, won’t defend title

World number three Stanislas Wawrinka won’t be competing at the Portugal Open in Oeiras next week. The Swiss number one player is the defending champion at this ATP 250 claycourt event.

Wawrinka is taking a much-needed break after winning the Monte Carlo Masters title a week ago. He’ll be gearing for two upcoming ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome prior to the Roland Garros tournament which begins later in May.

Wawrinka has been having a breakthrough 2014 season which saw him win his maiden Grand Slam title in Australia and winning his first Masters title in Monaco.

Tomas Berdych is now the top seed of Portugal Open followed by Canada’s Milos Raonic.
