Dinara Safina to officially retire via the Madrid Open tourney – report

French sports daily L’Equipe reported that former top-ranked Dinara Safina will officially retire from professional tennis when she visits Madrid later this week to present the trophy to the women’s champion.

Safina reached the rankings summit back in 2009 but chronic back injuries have forced her to take long breaks from tennis. She has not competed since the Madrid Open back in 2011. Safina, the younger sister of two-time Grand Slam champion and former number one Marat Safin, is currently studying at a university in Moscow.
