Nikolay Davydenko to skip Wimbledon 2014, ponders retirement

Former world number three Nikolay Davydenko is considering retiring from professional tennis following a first round loss at this week’s Roland Garros 2014 tournament.

“What I need to do is see if I will continue this year after Paris or not,” Davydenko was quoted as saying by Sport 360.

“For sure I will not play Wimbledon, I’m skipping the grass completely. I’m in the Wimbledon main draw, normally I should go there but I will pull out of Wimbledon for sure. I have no interest playing there.”

Davydenko’s ranking will fall out of the world’s top 100 after the French Open and he had stressed that he won’t be playing in lower tier tournaments in a bid to improve his ranking. He said that he will assess once the season is over whether he will continue or not.

“If I continue this year I can for sure get wildcards,” he said. “That’s why I need to decide what I need to do. Because if they give me wildcards I need to practice again and need to prepare for these tournaments.”

The 32-year old said he’s not ruling out coaching in the future.

“I saw players I was playing 10 years ago and they’re now coaching. It can happen,” he said.
