Novak Djokovic can take over number one ranking after Roland Garros 2014

Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic can reclaim the world number one ranking after the Roland Garros 2014 tournament (which begins on Sunday, May 25) with a strong run in Paris.

Current world number one Rafael Nadal is guaranteed to hold on to the top ranking for the next two weeks but with a less-than-stellar showing at Roland Garros could lead to drop in rankings.

Djokovic made a strong statement when he won the Rome Masters 2014 tournament last weekend, dethroning Nadal who was the 2013 champion at this ATP Masters 1000 event.

Here are the scenarios that Nadal could lose the number one ranking:

* Anything less than a semifinal result in Paris, regardless of Djokovic’s performance
* Djokovic will reclaim the top ranking if Nadal loses to another opponent in the final and the Serbian posts a quarterfinal finish or more in the event.

Djokovic is defending only 720 points following a semifinal showing at Roland Garros last year (lost to Nadal) while the Spaniard is the defending champion at this Grand Slam event which means he needs to defend 2,000 ranking points.
