World number one Rafael Nadal may lose the top ranking after the 2014 Madrid Masters based on current rankings. His rival, number two Novak Djokovic has a mathematical chance to regain the top ranking.
Nadal, the defending champion at this prestigious event, could lose the number one ranking if he loses before the quarterfinals and Djokovic will go on to win the title. A year ago, Djokovic lost in his opening match at this event to Grigor Dimitrov thus he only has 10 points to defend.
Here’s a breakdown, looking ahead to next week’s Mutua Madrid Open.
