Venus Williams pulls out of Madrid Open, cites ongoing illness as reason

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams won’t be competing at this week’s Mutua Madrid Open. The American cited that she’s having an ongoing illness that forced her out of this Premier Mandatory event.

Williams was not able to make it in last year’s edition with a back injury. She joins world number four Victoria Azarenka in the sidelines for this claycourt event.

Williams has a promising start of the 2014 season which saw her winning the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. She also made it in the fourth round in both Miami Open and Charleston before pulling out of a WTA International event in Kuala Lumpur a week ago.

She’s scheduled to compete at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome next week.
