Carla Suárez Navarro ends Tomljanovic run at Roland Garros

Number 14 seed Carla Suárez Navarro of Spain secured a place at the French Open 2014 quarterfinals with a straight sets victory over 21-year old Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia 6-3, 6-3. Tomljanovic produced one of the biggest upsets in the tournament after eliminating Agnieszka Radwanska, ranked 3rd, in the previous round.

“It was difficult to return her serve,” Suárez Navarro said. “Although I was able to break her, I wasn’t feeling comfortable. The beginning of the second set is always a very important time. I made too many mistakes in that first game, but what matters is that I was able to get my act together and make the necessary changes.”

“I am disappointed that I lost today,” Tomljanovic said. “I wish I could have played better. But aside from today, there have obviously been a lot more positives than negatives this tournament. I showed that I can play well and compete against the best girls.”

Up next for Suarez Navarro is 16th-ranked Eugenie Bouchard who eliminated Angelique Kerber in straight sets as well.

“She really has played well,” Suárez Navarro said of the Canadian. “She’s a dangerous player and has already reached a Grand Slam semifinal, which I have never done. This is going to be a difficult match. I’m going to have to play really well.”
