2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova is through to the Roland Garros quarterfinals after outlasting Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic in their fourth round clash on Monday. The final score was 6-3, 6-4. They’ve split their past six meetings 3-3 but this is their first time to compete against each other on clay.
This is Kuznetsova’s sixth quarterfinal in Paris and will have a tougher assignment in the next round as she faces fourth-ranked Simona Halep of Romania. Kuznetsova won their most recent meeting at Stuttgart earlier this year.
“She is already in the Top 10 and is a very good player,” Kuznetsova said of the Romanian tennis star. “I think she is going to get even better than she is now.”
“It doesn’t matter who won the last match. It’s going to be a new match in a Grand Slam quarterfinal. It’s going to be amazing, difficult and exciting to play her.”
