Grigor Dimitrov captures Queen’s Club title, beats Feliciano Lopez

Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria won his first career grasscourt title on Sunday after outlasting Spain’s 10th seed Feliciano Lopez 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 in the final of the Aegon Championships 2014 Queen’s Club. Dimitrov became the first ATP player this season to win titles on three different surfaces.

“I’m really happy with the win,” said Dimitrov. “Obviously I knew what I had to do today out on the court, and [Lopez] is one of those competitors that when it comes to fast surfaces, he’s always very tricky to play. I just fought hard and left everything out on the court – that was my main goal. I achieved what I was looking for.”

Dimitrov will bring home € 90,100 in prize money plus 250 points. He’s now inching his way up to the elite world’s top ten following this victory. Lopez will bring home € 51,300 and gained 150 points. The Spaniard will be in Eastbourne this week to defend the Aegon International title.

“I think when you face players like Grigor, you know that even playing the way I played today there is a chance to lose because he’s a great player,” said Lopez. “He never gives up, as he showed today.

“It’s tough to lose when you play such a great match. Overall it was a great week for me. It has been a great preparation for Wimbledon, and hopefully in Eastbourne, next week, I can do well again. It’s true that I’m feeling great. I’m playing good and hopefully I can continue playing like this for the next two or three weeks.”

In doubles, Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares won the title after defeating Jamie Murray and John Peers 4-6, 7-6, 10-4.
