Rafael Nadal deals with back problems, less grasscourt matches ahead of Wimbledon

The Wimbledon 2014 tournament begins next week and world number one Rafael Nadal is dealing once more with a slew of issues including back problems and less grasscourt matchplay. Nadal lost his opening round match at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, just four days after winning his ninth French Open title.

Nadal said that he only practiced on grass at Halle in less than a day after winning in Paris and he’s still mulling whether to participate in exhibition matches on grass this week.

“So probably I will take two or three days off,” he said.

After his loss in Germany, Nadal returned to his hometown in Mallorca to rest and spend time with family and friends.

“I will fly to Wimbledon Wednesday early morning and play and practice a few days there. I don’t know if I’m going to have one match or not before,” he said.

“I don’t have a very bad feeling but I still feel the back a little bit,” he said about his back. “It’s something similar I had at the Australian Open. I have a little bit of an oedema in the bone in the back.

“And I felt that during Roland Garros in the first round, especially in the second round it was worse. But it’s true that after the second round I was improving. Today is not the worst day but I feel that I need to improve, I need to rest a little bit. I need to improve a little bit to try to play well in Wimbledon.”
