Simona Halep overwhelms Stephens to book French Open quarterfinal spot

World number four Simona Halep, the highest seed left, overwhelmed Sloane Stephens of United States 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros 2014 tournament. This is the second consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal for the Romanian after reaching the same stage back in January at the Australian Open.

“I’m really happy I’m in the quarterfinals for the first time in my life here because I love Paris,” Halep said. “I have a lot of confidence in myself. Day by day I’m playing better and better. I love the clay here and feel very comfortable. I don’t want to stop in the quarterfinals – I want to go further and I have to get ready for the next test.”

Halep lost in the opening round at this event a year ago but she would go on to win a total of seven titles since then which saw her ranking rise to number four in the world. She will next face 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova after the latter eliminated Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic.
