2014 US Open Wild Card Challenge starts

The USTA on Monday launched the 2014 US Open Wild Card Challenge which gives the USTA Pro Circuit to give wild cards to deserving players for the upcoming US Open Tennis Championships.

For American tennis players who won’t be able to gain direct entry into the US Open can participate in this event. One male and one female with the most number of ranking points earned from two of four (ATP) and two of three (WTA) USTA Pro Circuit selected hardcourt events will earn main draw wild cards in the last Grand Slam event of the season.

The women’s events that comprise the US Open Wild Card Challenge include this week’s $50,000 tournament in Sacramento; the USTA Player Development Women’s $50,000 Classic in Carson, Calif., the week of July 14; and the $50,000 Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships in Lexington, Ky., the week of July 21.

The men’s tournaments in the challenge include the $50,000 Levene Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger in Binghamton, N.Y., the week of July 14; the $50,000 Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships in Lexington, the week of July 21; the $100,000 Odlum Brown VanOpen in Vancouver, B.C., the week of July 28; and the $100,000 Comerica Bank Challenger in Aptos, Calif., the week of Aug. 4.

The 2012 edition was won by Steve Johnson and Mallory Burdette – both would go on to reach the third round of the US Open. Last year, Bradley Klahn and Shelby Rogers gained wild cards in New York.

The 2014 US Open begins on August 25 and concludes on September 8, Monday.
