Caroline Wozniacki ousts Vinci to claim Istanbul Cup title

Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki completed a successful campaign at this week’s TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup after the top seed Dane defeated second seed Roberta Vinci in the final on Sunday 6-1, 6-1. The match lasted 67 minutes.

Wozniacki faced tough challenges in the earlier rounds where she had to overcome Karin Knapp and Karolina Pliskova in three sets. She cruised past Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Vinci had a dominating run to the final where she didn’t lose a set all tournament before the final.

This is Wozniacki’s 22nd career WTA title and first of this season. She has now won at least one title every year in the past seven years.

Vinci still has a lot to be happy about following this tournament. Despite losing the title match for the second week in a row, she had gone 8-2 since Wimbledon, a turn-around from a 7-17 record she had from the start of 2014 until Wimbledon.

The doubles title was won by Misaki Doi and Elina Svitolina after the duo defeated Paula Kania and Oksana Kalashnikova.
