David Ferrer takes Hamburg wildcard, becomes top seed

World number seven David Ferrer has taken a wild card in next week’s ATP 500 bet-at-home Open in Hamburg, Germany. This ATP 500 claycourt event has a total financial commitment of € 1,190,700. Ferrer has had lackluster result during the grasscourt season as he was dealing with a stomach injury.

The Hamburg event offered a wild card to Rafael Nadal but the latter opted out of the tournament in order to take a much needed break after Wimbledon and prepare for the North American hardcourt season where he’s aiming to defend three titles, including the US Open.

Last year, Hamburg enjoyed substantial media coverage when Roger Federer played in the event where he reached the semifinals. The Swiss star won’t be attending next week. Last year, he lost in the second round of Wimbledon and decided to participate using a new racquet back then.
