Elina Svitolina successfully defends Baku Cup title

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina successfully defended the Baku Cup title in Azerbaijan on Sunday after defeating 2012 champion Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-1, 7-6. This is Svitolina’s second career WTA title. Svitolina only lost one set the entire week and that lone set-loss came in the semifinals to veteran Francesca Schiavone.

Svitolina became the first teenager to win two or more titles since Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova achieved this feat back in 2011 [Monterrey (2010, 2011) and Istanbul (2011)].

Jovanovski was understandably sluggish during the first part of the final. After all, she had to overcome earlier opponents in three set matches and even had to claw her way back in a 1-4 deficit in the third set of her semifinal match.

The doubles title was won by Heather Watson and Alexandra Panova after the duo outplayed Shahar Peer and Raluca Olaru 6-2, 7-6.
