Federer, Tiger Woods share top spot for Most Valuable Athletes List

Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer and golf superstar Tiger Woods share the top spot for list of Most Valuable Athletes in the World presented by Forbes Magazine. The magazine revealed that both Federer and Woods each earned $46 million with their names in 2013. Forbes reported that tournament organizers shell out more than $1 million just to get a starting guarantee from Federer’s management. The Swiss world number three’s 10-year contract with sporting brand Nike is worth more than $100 million. Federer’s success in the sport is also translated in the social with his official Facebook page garnering nearly 15 million fans.

“Consistency for so many years has benefitted Federer’s brand value greatly. In his case, it doesn’t even matter if he wins another big tournament again,” says Hans-Willy Brockes, the head of Europäische Sponsoring Börse (ESB).

“A brand’s value generally comes from its recognition and the ability to generate sales and earnings based on this recognition. That’s why Google and Apple are among the most valuable brands ever, while the brand value of Basler Läckerli cookies is much lower.”

Other tennis stars making the top ten list are WTA stars Maria Sharapova of Russia at number four and Li Na of China in number eight.
